SMART Civils Construction was founded in 2012, starting out as a civil engineering construction company and operating as a sub-contractor. In 2019 we obtained a CIDB grade 8CEPE / 7GBP, which enabled us to take on more responsibility and operate independently.
Our current business model allows us to work independently or in partnership with larger companies to deliver multi-disciplinary projects. This gives us access to a vast pool of professional engineers, highly skilled quantity surveyors and hands-on project managers.
GROWING AND DEVELOPMENT
The addition of a Specialist Division enabled us to expand into structural repairs and strengthening, bridge jacking and bearing replacement, and other specialised solutions for the Civil Engineering Industry.
In 2022 the Post Tensioning Division was started with the acquisition of the Dywidag Licence for Southern Africa. Our recently added Products Division will start with the supply of all Dywidag Geotechnical Products including the market leading Gewi Bar range of products.
We are a partner of choice for government, the private sector, and state-owned enterprises. Our offices are based in Cape Town and Johannesburg, with plans to expand our footprint across Southern Africa and further afield.

THE TEAM
PHUMUDZO BALOYI
Phumudzo is a registered professional engineer with over 24 years of experience. He is a structural engineer with a wide variety of experience including business management and leadership, structural design, and project management. He holds a Masters Degree in Structural Engineering from the University of Pretoria and an MBA from the University of Stellenbosch.
ANDREW IBBOTSON
Andrew is a registered professional engineer with over 40 years of experience and holds a BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering. Andrew’s employment experience includes clients, engineering consultants, large civil engineering contractors and his own specialist construction company. His focus is on structural concrete repairs, and he manages the Rehabilitation Division as well as commercial and contractual matters. Andrew is a Fellow of the Association of Arbitrators SA.
MASHUDU BALOYI
Mashudu has 20 years of experience. He holds an NDIP in Building Management and a BSc in Quantity Surveying. He is currently completing his BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying at the University of the Free State. Mashudu’s primary expertise is in cost engineering for large construction projects.
CHRIS NDWAMATO
Chris is a registered professional construction project manager with over 20 years of experience managing building and engineering projects. His experience enables him to manage multi-disciplinary construction and engineering projects, and to achieve successful completion thereof within budget, quality and on time. He holds a BTech degree in Quantity Surveying, as well as an MBA and is currently completing his BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying at the University of the Witwatersrand.
MIKE HILDYARD
Mike is the business development manager for Smart Civils & PT Systems. He holds an NDIP in Mechanical Engineering and has over 35 years experience in mechanical design and the repair and rehabilitation of concrete and steel structures.
JACO MEYER
Jaco holds a BEng (Civil) and brings 17+ years of expertise in the construction industry. Specializing in reinforced concrete, civil works, water retaining structures, and structural repairs, he excels in project management, navigating cost systems, and handling contractual and commercial matters. Jaco is registered with SACPCMP as a Professional Construction Manager.
MICHELLE DATELING
Michelle is a contracts manager with 8 years of experience in post tensioned structures as well as concrete rehabilitation and structural strengthening. She holds a BEng degree in Civil Engineering and is currently finishing her Masters in Structural Engineering from the University of Johannesburg.
JOHAN BOOYSEN
Johan is a contracts manager with 13 years of experience in the post tensioned industry. He holds an NDIP in Civil Engineering from the Tshwane University of Technology.
DANIE VAN WYK
Danie holds a BEng (Civil) degree and is also registered as a professional construction manager with SACPCMP. He has over 20 years’ experience in the construction industry mainly being involved in heavy reinforced concrete structures, civil works, roads and earthworks, concrete repairs, as well as in general project management.
